Parents

Being a parent is very rewarding but can also be very challenging.  Your child’s needs seemed easy when they were babies (keeping them safe, nurtured, fed and healthy) but the adolescent years can take on a whole different look and feel.  We become all too aware of the potential risks out there like: alcohol, tobacco or illicit drug use, dangerous driving, sexual activity, maybe even the pressures of school, sports or fitting in.  Navigating the teen years can be formidable!  But research shows that kids who learn from their parents about the dangers of underage drinking, illicit drugs, dangerous driving and other risky behaviors are less likely to engage in them.

Research also indicates that YOU, THE PARENT, are the most powerful influence in your child’s life—always.  Did you know that surveys of teens show that they want and expect their parents to play a key role in their lives?  They appreciate you.  They listen.  They remember your advice.  Even when it seems like they’re not paying attention.

The best news:  No Parent is Alone!  There are things beyond our control that can impact our families, our youth.  More often than we would hope, substance use is an issue that arises and has to be addressed.  There are resources and help in addressing substance abuse.  The Mayor’s Alliance is committed to partnering with parents in this journey from childhood to adulthood.
